Hacom Energy’s Ingenious Solution Transforms Grey Garden Estate’s Power Problems

Away from the hustle and bustle of Lagos metropolitan city lies Grey Garden Estate located in Lekki, a stone throw from Chevron HQ, Lagos.

The estate is an appealing haven for residents seeking serenity. Unfortunately, this serene estate faced a series of power problems that threatened its power supply.


The problems

  1. Difficulty in charging for power generated through the Diesel generators.
  2. Discrepancy in Eko Disco’s monthly bill and total amount received.
  3. Inability to collect other estates dues and service charges.
  4. The previous vending platform releases money to them at the end of the month.
  5. The previous facility manager mismanaged the revenues form electricity purchased since money were sent to his account.

The Solution


After understanding the problem, Hacom Energy proffered a lasting solution by installing our flagship Dual Energy Source Meters (this single meter can read power from both Grid and Generator) along with Olivia Power Vending Software.

We encouraged the estate exco to open a bank account designated for the estate dues and the following actions were taken:


1. Dual Metering:

The first step was to provide a metering device that can independently read the energy consumed from dual energy sources. In addressing the challenge of distinguishing between grid electricity and generator power, we introduced our smart dual meters. These innovative devices are capable of discerning and measuring the flow of current from the grid and the diesel-powered generator. The dual meters allowed both residents and estate management to acquire tokens that granted access to either power source individually. The meters’ intelligent interface displayed each consumption distinctly, enabling seamless tracking and management of energy consumed.


2. Debt Elimination through Smart Vending:

Hacom Energy’s second step was to set up a custom vending system (through our Olivia vending system) for Grey Gardens. It allowed the excos to set 2 separate tariffs plan for Generator at N150 and N75 for Grid. This solution also empowered the exco to incorporate the accumulated debt into the vending system alongside the monthly electricity bill, service charges, and generator costs.


3. Fair Utilization of the Generator:

Thirdly, to ensure fair usage of the estate’s diesel generator by each occupant, the estate management committee aimed to measure individual consumption accurately. This was achieved by setting a flat base fee for Diesel cost. The vending platform allowed the resident to buy and load tokens separately for each energy source (Grid and Generator).


4. Transparency and Equitability:

Hacom Energy’s solution fostered transparency between estate management and residents. By providing occupants with the means to access insights into their monthly electricity and generator consumption, the smart meters promoted open communication and understanding. The meters’ interface showcased interchangeable displays, reflecting both types of consumption from the grid and generator, thereby facilitating equitable cost distribution.


5. Revenue Assurance and Prompt Receipt of Payment:

Power vending is done individually by residents and also has the admin features to help residents struggling to make purchases online. Once a purchase is made, the funds are settled into the Exco account the following day (a standard practice by payment gateways).


As a result of deploying our Dual Metering and Power vending solution, Grey Gardens that was once struggling to meet up with its bills payments was able to conveniently settle indebtedness to Eko Disco. Within three months of implementation, they had excess cash flow and were able to reduce their tariff based on prices of Diesel and cash buffer. Grey Garden Estate’s residents and Exco are very excited that they are now in charge of their power metering and no more debt or hassles in managing the process.
